On the Edge

Don't quite let it happen,
Stay safely on the edge,
And remember that the height is really,
Of no consequence,

Except in your mind when it considers,
All of the possibilities,
Dependent on some lapse in judgment,
Or extremely low probabilities.

And when you understand it's really about,
Appreciating where you are:
A place few would go if they even had the chance,
You realize how unique you really are.

And that's alright,
That puts you in a class of your own,
In a world where it's impossible to judge,
Where you are unless you're alone.

Nature

Things can change so fast,
You better not be too solid,
Unless you want to attain the respect of others,
For what you always did,

Instead of what you might do.
Sometimes it's better to be unpredictable,
Though, there is something to be said for stalwartness,
For keeping systems manageable.

Either way, always there or sporadic,
The key to keeping up and keeping your head down,
And concentrated at the task at hand,
No matter how your nature is bound,

To being alright,
Whether on stilts or sturdy ground,
Not thinking can be a great asset,
If it means the truth will eventually come around.

Just Don't Do It

It's never easy knowing the truth,
So does that mean you must be shallow,
And never participate deeper with others,
Than so that you can up and go,

So that no one can connect you to anything,
And so never accuse you,
Of doing anything that might be critiqued,
Because there's nothing that you do?

You're never misrepresented,
If you never represent yourself.
True, but you can also never be anything,
And, actually, you can never help.

But it's alright,
Maybe if everyone just did that,
There'd be a lot less reason for fights in this world,
And that ain't so bad.

Politics

Either you want to progress,
Or impede that of others,
Or do nothing and complain about it,
Or just watch from under the covers.

The thing is no one knows the all of it,
So, it's best to let everyone know,
What it is that you're thinking about everything,
Unless you're in it for your own,

Unless what interests you is not community,
But community the way you want it,
Which takes one view born of the unknown,
And treating it as an agreed covenant.

And it's alright,
Because the truth prevails in the end,
Though by its nature the end never comes,
Which leaves us all with this fascism.

Confidence

If at first you don't believe,
Try try again,
'Cause until you do, no one else will,
And you'll always be losing.

Everything is arguable, as all know,
Look at the absurdities believed in the past,
And in one's world, the only esteem available,
Is based on faith that can only last,

As long as the confidence of the one,
Of whom the thing is believed,
Is maintained, and that permanence,
Is the key.

And it's alright,
If it's shaken every once in a while,
As long as it is absorbed internally,
And you always keep your smile.

Others

It is that easy to let go,
It is that easy to look away,
It is that easy to pretend that nothing,
Matters anyway.

And as long as you do that,
There won't be any responsibility,
That you need recognize, though others might,
Feel you have some, annoyingly.

And if you want to pretend that you understand,
What's going on in others' brains,
It behooves you to assume they want good,
And then you owe them, at least, a way,

To pretend it's alright,
And that you will help take care of them,
'Cause nothing else makes sense when giving life to others,
In the end.

Running

Does one have to leave their home,
To escape it,
Or does the running, itself, negate the chance,
That they will be triumphant,?

For what's the goal except to find a new one,
Which also entails settling down?
While the act of searching requires the type of person,
Who is never around.

But maybe if you have someone to ground you,
To be the anchor while you work to break free,
The exertion will change the world around you,
Without ever being at liberty.

And it's alright,
If you want to run sometimes,
Just never make it to or from something,
Because you'll always miss the important signs.

True Self

No matter how much you experience,
You're missing an important part,
Of life, if you avoid conflict,
'Cause it's the only way to a heart,

Or, at least, part of the key.
And argument is not enough,
Nor is physical altercations,
Conflict isn't fisty-cuffs.

It's willingness to expose your true thoughts,
The ones that keep you up at night.
A fight about art is not a conflict,
Unless you fear for your life,

And that it might not be alright,
If someone learns your true weakness,
Because you'll never show them your true self,
Which, again, is an important life experience.

Just Do It

This is what happens when,
You want to do something perfectly:
That something doesn't get done,
And you look like a dweeb,

And the more you do it the less a person you are,
And this is why:
A person's defined by what he does,
Not by what he decides.

And nothing's perfect except by accident,
So nothing planned ever happens anyway.
Okay, there're exceptions to every rule,
Which is also proof of what I say.

And it's alright,
If you fail most of the time,
Those odds are infinitely better than,
If you never cross the line.

Mounting Pressure

How do you keep your chin up?
Let me count the ways,
Unless you're asking how to do it,
Outside the vacuum of your brain,

Where anything can be reduced to nothing,
Though the consequences of that,
Is real physical pain for irresponsibility.
There's no cusion for a door mat.

The only role your insides have in control,
Is how the world views your reactions,
Which has an effect on how you're then treated in the future,
And whether you go through the same shit again.

So, it's alright,
To maintain the face of Job,
In the face of mounting pressures.
Just make sure you knock off your tasks as you go.

How does you know,
What people really think,
When it's so hard to find the place,
Where you are all in sync,

Where you all know you're speaking the same language,
And want to do the same thing,
And there is no doubt that you're not all separating,
And backstabbing,

And talking to each other about how,
One of you just doesn't get it?
If minds were only open for observation...
Well, then, there be no need for poets.

And it's alright,
There may not be any, anyway.
It all depends on the truth behind,
What others say.

Too Much

There's no way one can handle,
Everything at once,
Or even everything one after another,
Or even half as much,

Or even anything at all really,
If one is alone,
And even if not, those with one,
Must care enough to be at home,

When one is calling for the help that, surely,
One will need within one's lifetime,
As everyone who's ever done anything,
Has learned in time.

But it's alright,
If one really has no one,
Then chances are there's nothing to do,
And no one waiting for the conclusion.

Living Good

Things always get better,
Before they get worse,
And then, of course, better again,
And on, until your ride in a hearse.

And if you learn to ride out the bad,
And savour the good,
You may be doing yourself a disservice,
In the name of saving yourself some hurt,

For what is bad is only what it is,
In light of what you do on this earth,
Which is live and learn and form opinions,
Of what you want and what you'd rather deter.

But it's alright,
If you only want to live half a life,
What happens in those times you'd rather avoid,
Aren't very nice.

Status

What is there with status,
That is there intrinsically,
When every person is born equal,
Though some have more money,

And some have more potential,
To be what they want to be,
Or, to be something successful,
In the eyes of society,

Or are just extremely lucky?
Is that a real quality?
And is every person born equal,
Regardless of what they end up to be?

Oh, it's alright,
No future is stamped in stone,
Or, at least, no future is predictable,
No matter what a child is told.

What There Is

There's no time to wonder,
About the things that matter,
Like what's it all for and what's the point,
Of doing anything but gather,

Money, power and, I guess, what else?
Isn't that what it's all about?
Really, is there anything that can get you,
Out?

There is retraction into oneself,
Through connection with an inner being,
Which gives you power over not being hurt,
By anything.

And it's alright,
If that's enough for you.
It's not your fault what society's made,
Of a formerly perfect world.

No More Chances

If it's not what you want to do,
Then, don't do it.
And if you say, 'I have no choice in the matter,'
Then, maybe you're not independent,

Which is fine, but in the matter of your person,
How could you let it come to this?
To let yourself become an aggregate of others,
Is to surrender your personness.

And if you say, 'it was not always like this,
Those that loved me, loved me for who I was,'
Then you are lying to yourself,
Because who one is is what one does.

And it's alright,
When you look back on your life,
And realize you made decisions for the wrong reason,
And are too far in to just roll the dice.
